Fire Permits for the 2009 season are now being written. If you require a permit for burning, please stop by the Caribou Fire Department and a new permit will be written for you.
A FIRE PERMIT IS REQUIRED for any open burning.
Permits can be obtained from your local fire department, your local fire warden, or a Forest Ranger, that has jurisdiction over the location where the fire is to be set. Fire permits may also be obtained on-line for a fee of $7.00 via the Maine Department of Conservation web site at http://www.maine.gov/burnpermit/.
Any person who engages in outdoor burning that is prohibited by statute or who fails to comply with the conditions of the permit shall be guilty of a class E crime.
The permittee MUST:
The permittee is responsible for the fire, if the fire escapes, and may be liable for suppression costs up to $10,000, as well as any damages caused to other property.
FIRES MUST BE ATTENDED AT ALL TIMES.
NO OPEN BURNING OF RUBBER PRODUCTS, ASPHALT SHINGLES, WIRE INSULATION, TAR, PAINTS, SOLVENTS OR PLASTIC PRODUCTS.
Fire Permits may be obtained at the Caribou Fire Department for the following areas: Caribou, Connor Twp., New Sweden, Westmanland, and Woodland. You need to apply for a fire permit in person. A permit will be issued for the full year. You will be required to call the Caribou Fire Department everytime you wish to burn. This will activate your permit. If you do not call to activate your permit and you do burn this will be considered as burning without a permit. Remember as a permit holder, you are responsible for the fire and can be held liable for any and all damages caused by this fire.
The following is the Open Burning Guidelines set up by the Caribou Fire Department:
1. You must call before burning to activate this permit ! You will need to give us your permit number when you call.
2. You must follow safety requirements shown on the permit.
3. For campfires the fireplace must have rock, brick, or metal
containment no larger than three feet.
4. The fireplace must be at least 20 feet from any buildings.
5. The permit will be from 8am to 12 midnight each day. Normally we do not allow burning before 5pm. Call this station (493-4204) before 9pm if you plan to have a fire that night. We need to know that you are having a campfire before the neighbors call us to report a fire.
6. You must burn only wood (no painted or treated wood) or other materials.
7. The smoke from any fire must not bother the neighbors. If the smoke from any fire does bother anyone, you may be asked by the Fire or Police Departments to put it out. You must comply with that request.
Thank You For Your Co-operation.
